We believe you should know exactly what you’re paying for and why. This page explains every line item you might see at checkout on Local Pass. Nothing is hidden, and nothing is marked up.

Subtotal

This is the total cost of the items in your cart before any fees, taxes, or discounts are applied. It’s calculated directly from the prices set by the vendor.

Tax

Taxes are calculated based on your province and the type of order.

Food Tax (GST)

All food items are subject to 5% GST, regardless of province.

Platform Fee Tax

The service fee is a digital marketplace service, so it’s taxed separately: The tax amounts shown at checkout are real — they’re remitted to the government. Local Pass does not profit from taxes.

Service Fee

The service fee covers the cost of running the Local Pass platform — including payment processing, order management, driver dispatch, and customer support. It is made up of several components:
  • Platform fee — covers technology and operational costs
  • Regulatory fee — helps cover driver compliance costs
  • Small order surcharge — applies when your cart is below a certain threshold (see below)
  • Payment processing fee — a flat Stripe fee of $0.30 included per transaction
The regulatory fee and small order surcharge only apply when Local Pass itself is dispatching the driver — that’s restaurant Delivery, and Express in the Food Marketplace. They’re not charged on Pickup, Shipping, or standard Food Marketplace Delivery (which always uses the vendor’s own driver). Pickup instead uses a simpler flat platform fee: 5% of your subtotal, capped at a few dollars.
The service fee is always shown before you confirm payment. There are no surprise charges after checkout.

Small Order Fee

When your cart subtotal is below a vendor’s minimum order threshold, a small order fee is added to your service fee. This is not a penalty — it covers the baseline cost of processing a small order (payment processing, packaging handling, etc.). You can avoid the small order fee by adding more items to your cart. The Order Goal Tracker in your cart will show you exactly how much more you need to add to waive it.
The Goal Tracker in your cart will label this milestone as “Fee” so you always know when you’re close to waiving it.

Delivery Fee

The delivery fee goes directly to covering the cost of getting your order from the vendor to you. How it’s calculated depends on your fulfillment type:

Standard Delivery

The delivery fee is calculated based on your distance from the vendor, order size, and any vendor subsidies. Some vendors partially or fully subsidize their delivery fee — if so, you’ll see a reduced or free delivery fee at checkout.

Express Delivery

Express uses a separate, real-time rate that reflects on-demand driver costs. It is typically higher than standard delivery.

Pickup

No delivery fee is charged.

Shipping

Shipping fees are the real rates quoted by the carrier (Canada Post, Purolator, etc.) based on your address and the weight/dimensions of your order. Local Pass does not mark them up.

Long Distance Charge

If your delivery address is significantly further than the vendor’s standard delivery zone (typically beyond 9 km), a long distance charge may be added. You’ll see a yellow warning at checkout if this applies to your order.

Bag Fee

A $0.25 bag fee may be applied. This is a provincially mandated charge in BC (and other provinces) for single-use bags. It is remitted to the appropriate regulatory authority and is not kept by Local Pass.
This isn’t a delivery-only fee everywhere. On restaurant orders, it’s charged on Pickup too, not just Delivery — packaging still needs a bag even when you’re the one picking it up. On Food Marketplace orders, it only applies to Delivery and Express, not Pickup or Shipping.

Driver Tip

Tips are optional and go 100% to the driver who delivers your order. Local Pass does not take any portion of tips. Where it’s shown, you’ll see preset tip options:
  • $1.50
  • $2.50 (default, marked Popular)
  • $3.50
  • Other
  • No Tip
Tips aren’t shown everywhere delivery happens. On restaurant orders, the tip option appears for any Delivery order, regardless of whether a Local Pass driver or the vendor’s own driver ends up delivering it. On Food Marketplace orders, tipping only appears for Express — standard Delivery (the vendor’s own driver) has no tip option, since there’s no Local Pass driver in that flow. Pickup and Shipping never show a tip.

Discount

If a promotion has been applied to your order, the discount will appear as a negative line item (e.g. -$5.00). Promotions are applied automatically — you don’t need to enter a code. See Promotions & Discounts for details.

Local Coins

Local Coins are rewards earned from previous orders on Local Pass. You can redeem them at checkout to reduce your total. The amount redeemed appears as a negative line item. See Local Coins to learn how to earn and use them.

Total

The total is the final amount charged to your payment method. It is calculated as:
The total shown at checkout is the exact amount Stripe will charge. There are no hidden fees added after you confirm.

Where Does Your Money Go?

We want to be fully transparent about how every dollar is allocated. Here is the honest answer: Local Pass does not add markups to any third-party cost. The delivery fee you see is not inflated — it reflects the real cost of moving your order.
